I love reading your writing PT, but I don't feel like you answered your own question...How did your kid get into Duke? Other than be a homeschooler and by standing out. But you don't really go into the specifics....

Congrats to your son, well done! (both of you) I love that you include the 3 components of a great post that you have consistently taught… I’m a believer. Sharing this post with this great advice in a crosspost.

Kudos Penny,

The most insightful (to me) statement you made was "most people are scared to be remarkable ..." This is because once you raise the bar, you feel hypocritical if you do anything short of that standard. Additionally, to stand out from the crowd is to invite criticism. People who take no risks receive less criticism. I love your devil may care attitude, and wish I had your courage.

Peace,

D

I have related to your heart on a string and undeceiving straightness of words in time immemorial. It's been sometime (probably 3yrs) since my last read. It couldn't have come a more seasonable time. I've always appreciated your writing for well... your brazen and passionate take.

Congrats to your son (and to you) for taking your own road to get him to Duke.

My daughter is in 5th grade and heading into the formidable years of school transcript time. We are not homeschooling, but we are doing a personalized learning. She skiis Tues, Wednes, Thurs, Sat and Sunday. It's alot. It's also, doable for her and for me. It's all encompassing and I have no idea how families that have more than one child do it.

This post brought back my sympatico to you. It's so on par. Who cares about Chatgpt! Use it....don't use it, if you and your son can muster me to write a comment and engage, again. It- or you are doing 'something' right.

Keep doing youz.

Woot! Congratulations to your son! I hope he has a great experience there.

Also, the mention of writing piqued my memory of the Duke Writing Studio decades ago. It was like administering writing therapy, and I loved it.

At least a few decades ago, Duke really wanted all those new brilliant and quirky freshmen to really hone their writing as an essential skill. So if that's still true, every class in one's freshman year has a purposefully included writing focus, no matter the topic or field. You would not believe how many brilliant young students could not write worth a darn. But they would have help (human help) and they had lots and lots of practice, and they got better. So imho, (speaking as both parent and educator), it'll be to your son's advantage to not lean on AI too much and build those writing skills while he has the opportunity and support to do so. Also, I'm interested to see how Duke has adapted their Honor Code to accommodate or deflect the use of AI.

Also! I'd like to hear more about your process for applying. How did he wangle a full scholarship? I presume it's in music, or? That's so exciting. Tell us more!

My freshman year of college had that writing requirement as well. I loved it so much. My other college kid tells me that tons of teachers give take home tests in order to deal with ChatGPT. So the test assumes the student will use the Internet and the questions require kids to synthesize in a way the Internet won't do for them.
